Europe
Europe, also commonly referred to as the Old Continent, is the world’s sixth-largest continent. It covers an area of about 10,180,000 km2, 2% of the Earth’s surface and 6.8% of its land area. The population of Europe is estimated today at 747 million people.
The name EUROPE derives from the Ancient Greek elements εὐρύς (eurús) ‘wide, broad’ and ὤψ (ōps, gen. ὠπός, ōpós) ‘eye, face, countenance’, hence their composite Eurṓpē would mean ‘wide-gazing’ or ‘broad of aspect’.
European culture is the root of Western civilization, which traces its lineage back to ancient Greece and ancient Rome.
In 1949, the Council of Europe was founded with the idea of unifying Europe to achieve common goals and prevent future wars which led to the formation of the European Union (EU), a separate political entity that lies between a confederation and a federation.
There are 44 European countries in Europe, some of them being transcontinental, i.e. lie both in Asia and Europe. Twenty eight (28) European countries are today the members of the European Union which was formed after the second world war.
Europe is the world’s Nr.1 tourist destination. Just thinking about visiting this continent will make any traveller relax. It is a land frozen in time.
