The Americas
The Americas, also called America, is a continent of the Western Hemisphere comprising the totality of North and South America. With an area of 42,550,000 km2, they cover 8.3% of the Earth’s total surface area and 28.4% of its land area. Its population amounts to 1,002 billion, approximately 13.1% of the world’s population.
America is also known as the “New World”, due to its discovery by Europeans relatively late, only in the 15th century. There is however also evidence pointing to the ancient Hellenes (Greeks) as the first discoverers of the Americas, a millennium before Christopher Columbus.
There are 35 sovereign states in the Americas.
